Website editing help

I was attempting to customize the Home page. The only thing I’ve done so far is delete the Home example pages from the Home main tab. After I did that, when I went to my website I was brought to the default Home page (which was not the one I selected as the Home page) and when I clicked the Home tab the Home page I wanted popped up. So my first question is how do I get one Home page to connect with my URL, not two separate ones?
I tried to remedy the two Home page problem by deleting the Home page in the Menus section of the Backend editor. Unfortunately now no matter what I do my Home page now looks like a Blog page with the widget side bar. How do I remove the sidebar from my Home page?
