Visual composer won't activate after update

I am trying to help repair I site someone else installed. it seems after a wordpress update for (4.2.2), the plugins started having issues.

At this point the Visual composer won’t activate. If I try it will actual breake the wordpress UI as well as the site ( blank pages etc ).

I can get it back by renaming the js_composer directory in plugins.

Not sure how to resolve.
