ordered lists don't show with numbers

My Aegaeus theme pages won’t show item numbers when I create an ordered list, i.e. instead of getting this:

1. item 1
2. item 2
3. item 3

I get this:

item 1
item 2
item 3

I created the ordered list using plain html:

	
item 1
	
item 2
	
item 3

Interestingly, it displays OK in the WP page editor in the visual tab
