Navigation menu becomes a white box in black footer

I am using the Highend Word press theme. I notice something weird which I cannot resolve. I have a black footer page. When I try to add a navigation menu widget into the footer page, it creates a white block around it. When I select the Navigation menu link, it turns black (matching the black footer). Is there a way to change the white bar into a black color matching the footer before it is enabled? Here are pictures of it before selected and after selected. Thanks!!
