Media uploading but not displaying

My client just installed High End after a disappointing experience with another developer and we are running into an issue with media. After importing the demo data everything in the media library is showing the dreaded black X rather than the image. Any images imported do the same thing. We haven’t altered any of the defaults as this is a fresh install of both WP and the theme. Has this been encountered before? I’m not finding it in the forums.
