Global Search results filter with essential grid

I am trying to add filters to my global search function in the theme using the essential grid plugin that was bundled with the theme. Following the guide from themepunch (https://www.themepunch.com/essgrid-doc/global-search/) it says to add the class name for the search to connect it which will allow me to add the filters. However it is not working. I have tried several different listed classes and ids but no matter what my results still do not show the filter I am trying to add. I know I am setting up the filter end correctly as I have added different ones to static pages using short code. Please advise. Thank you.
