Gallery thumbnail format messed up after upgrade

Prior to the recent update(s) I had the thumbnail size in the Gallery set to display square format 1:1 from the page settings. Following the update(s) the thumbnails now display in their original orientation (landscape and portrait) and no longer in 1:1 ratio. I have tried to change it back several times but with no luck.

When I go into the Gallery settings and choose “view” on any one of the images they display in square format but not on the page itself.

I also continue to have issues with Visual Composer. I have followed all the listed steps to fix: deactivate/delete/re-install new version and cleared the cache. I also installed the newest theme update as well. But VC continues to spin endlessly without ever opening up. I was able to fix all of the formatting issues via HTML but cannot fix the Gallery thumbnail format issue.
