Essential Grid content area won't go transparent

Hello,

I am trying to set up the Essential Grid plugin to have a transparent background between the grid images, so that a background image shows in the gaps. However, the space is always filled in with white no matter what changes I make. I have tried to set it up exactly like the example with the transparency spaces, but nothing works.

Please advise.
