Child theme question

I have some files that I’ve been instructed by Branko to overwrite with every update so I don’t loose the function of some of the elements on my web site. I have been overwriting files in the highend theme. I am using a child theme. Shouldn’t I be putting something in the child theme instead of the parent? Isn’t using a child theme supposed to avoid this problem of having to overwrite files with every update?
