Blog Layout

When creating a blog layout…is it possible to create a fullwidth blog by using Elements instead of merely using Parent / Template on the main page?

I love the look of a Standard Grid style blog but want to break up the monotony of the grid by adding a row or other fullwidth elements between the rows of the grid at different points.
