How do you use slugs instead of numbers in page URLs?

My client wants me to use words instead of numbers as follows:

Instead of:

http://www.fraserviewcare.com/?page_id=118

they want:

http://www.fraserviewcare.com/?page_id=Volunteers

Is this possible? How do you configure it?
