Cannot figure out portfolio

I am using the 4 column portfolio gallery provided with the theme. I have never used wordpress before so I’m probably doing something wrong. I created the portfolio page, and then I went over the the left side bar in wordpress and clicked portfolio and then added a single portfolio item (I also deleted all the sample portfolio items that came with the demo theme). Now for the life of me I can’t figure out why it isn’t showing up on the portfolio page in one of the four columns. I have clicked and unclicked things and I can’t figure it out. I sent three categories and I specified the portfolio page to be one of the three, and the portfolio item is the same category. What am I doing wrong??
