blog-small not shrinking featured images

I’m trying to use the small blog layout for one of my pages. It keeps putting an enlarged image above the post title, which distorts the image completely. I’ve selected the blog-classic layout & chosen “small” from the drop down menu and updated. Still, when I view the page, oversized images are above the posts rather than being small and to the left of the post title & shortened text… I cannot get it to look like the demo version of the small blog.
