Over-Lapping Backgrounds

I have been having issues with my backgrounds. In using a two-column fullwidth section, I use a #ededed color background for both, however, the two conflict. I tried using it on one, but the background only covers a portion of the section. Is there a solution for this? See attachment for visual.
