Black box appears below layer slider on mobile

Hello,
When viewing the homepage on mobile, a large black box appears below the layer slider that’s at the top of the page. It seems to be related to the featured image – if I assign a featured image to the homepage, then the featured image appears in the same spot as this black box. How can I get this black box to disappear? I have attached a screenshot.
